Considerations in Moving WebCenter to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Written by Sam Harp and Randy Sussner | Jun 26, 2023 8:26:56 PM

Many organizations today still have Oracle WebCenter in an on-premise capacity.   Many of these organizations are considering a move to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (“OCI”).

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is a cloud service platform that enables customers to build/configure and run a wide range of applications in a highly available, consistently high-performance environment.

In looking at this migration/move of WebCenter to OIC, we believe the following considerations should be taken into account to ensure that the migration is not only successful but thrives in the new OCI environment.

Considerations with migration WebCenter to OCI Include:

  • What is the migration transport strategy?  Are you going to move via device transfer, a connection directly from your on-premise WebCenter system to OCI, and what is the speed of that connection?

  • What content will be migrated?  There may be content in the on-premise WebCenter repository that has reached its retention end date and will not need to be migrated.

  • What external host/legacy systems is WebCenter integrated with?  Will OCI be able to replicate these connections?

  • What is the best way or mechanism to store data in OCI?
    - Object Storage Model?
    - A network file share/system within OCI
    - Storage in the Oracle Database.

  • How does your organization want to search within WebCenter going forward?
    - Elastic Search
    - OTS
    - Database
    - Open Search

  • What is your Database
    - Installed
    - Database as a service?

  • What about using a non-Oracle database?  Would your organization migrate to an Oracle database?

  • What is your current backup strategy, and will that change once you move to OCI?
The above considerations/questions should be reviewed and answered before a migration begins.  Doing so will not only provide a better plan for the migration but also reduce the risk of any unexpected issues popping up during the process.
