I've watched M-Files climb this quadrant year over year while household names in the ECM space have stalled or slid backward. That's not an accident, and I think it's worth a moment to talk about why.
The legacy DMS playbook was built around the folder. Pick a structure, train your users, hope they file things consistently, and then spend the next decade fighting the entropy that inevitably sets in. Bigger, more established platforms doubled down on that model and bolted features onto it. M-Files made a different bet years ago, and they call it context-first document management. Instead of asking where a document lives, the platform asks what a document is, who it relates to, and which process it belongs to. Metadata does the work that folders never could.
That bet is paying off right now because of AI. An AI assistant pointed at a folder hierarchy is guessing. An AI assistant working inside a context-first repository has the relationships, permissions, and business meaning baked in from the start. The difference between those two experiences, for an end user, is night and day. It's also the difference between an AI feature that demos well and one that actually holds up in production.
That's the shift the Gartner analysts seem to be recognizing. Document management isn't really about documents anymore. It's about turning the information inside them into action, with governance that holds up when AI is the one doing the reading. M-Files has been building toward that future longer than most of their competitors have been talking about it.
