August 2019, I was fortunate enough to have traveled to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.

The weather was not great, considering it was summer, but that didn’t deter me from exploring and having an amazing experience. During my time there, I met lovely people, sited the core landmarks of the capital, ate tasty local food, did a walking tour, and visited the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in Pripyat. I wanted to spend more time there and promised I would come back one day. If it hadn’t been for the current pandemic – I likely would have returned already.

On Thursday the 24^th of February 2022, Russian forces launched a full scale invasion in Ukraine, creating a humanitarian crisis with many civilians having to face being displaced, injured, killed, or trapped with limited access to food, water, and medical supplies.

As this humanitarian crisis unfolds, New Zealand feels so far away yet connected, and I felt that I needed to do something to help those affected. With this in mind, I arranged a collection of personal donations from Wellington staff to support the Ukraine Crisis Appeal Project through Global Giving. One of the best things about Global Giving is that they distribute funds to community led organisations who are on the ground providing relief to those who need it most. TEAM IM New Zealand has kindly matched our teams’ donations dollar for dollar to support this well-deserved cause.

TEAM IM has been highly concerned about the devastating impact to livelihoods and the vast environmental damage. No matter what side any individual sits on the political spectrum, we can all agree that innocent lives are going through great upheaval or worse, are being lost in the name of war.

Our thoughts and sympathies remain with those who have been impacted by the ongoing conflict, including the people of Ukraine and the surrounding region, as well as their animal companions and loved ones throughout the world. We pray that peace is restored as quickly as possible.
